We Are Here:M/Others of Torbay was a residency and exhibition for ‘Wide Open’. which sought to bring the local community together through the shared experience of m/othering.
To m/other is ‘to look after (someone) kindly and protectively.’ Torbay has many mothers: biological mother, foster mothers, adoptive mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, mother figures, and individuals who care and protect. The act of m/othering unites us across social and cultural divides, and yet every experience is a unique journey, with it’s own set of trials and tribulations, joys and wonders, highs and lows.
Over the course of a week people from across the region came to reflect on their experiences of m/othering here, and responded using the materials provided to create postcards. The resulting pieces, numbering almost 100 pieces, were placed on display in ‘The Liberal Club’ for a further week.
